The older family words have お (o) at the front and さん (san) at the end: おかあさん (okaasan) is mother.

Kero: あのひとはおとうさんですか。 Ano hito wa otousan desu ka. Is that person the father?

Sensei: はい、そうです。 Hai, sou desu. Yes, that is right.

お～さん o...san older family

The older family words have お (o) at the front and さん (san) at the end: おかあさん (okaasan), mother. The younger ones, いもうと (imouto) and おとうと (otouto), have no さん (san).

おかあさん okaasan mother noun おかあさんはせんせいです。 Okaasan wa sensei desu. Mum is a teacher.
おとうさん otousan father noun おとうさん (otousan), father. Not おとうと (otouto), younger brother. おとうさんはいしゃです。 Otousan wa isha desu. Dad is a doctor.
おねえさん oneesan older sister noun おねえさんはだいがくせいです。 Oneesan wa daigakusei desu. My big sister is a university student.

おにいさん oniisan older brother noun おにいさんはこうこうせいです。 Oniisan wa koukousei desu. My big brother is a high school student.
いもうと imouto younger sister noun No さん (san) at the end. いもうとはいちねんせいです。 Imouto wa ichinensei desu. My little sister is a first-year student.
おとうと otouto younger brother noun おとうと (otouto), younger brother. Not おとうさん (otousan), father. おとうとはさんさいです。 Otouto wa sansai desu. My little brother is three.

The older family words are お (o), the middle, then さん (san).

- father: お + とう + さん = おとうさん (otousan)
- older sister: お + ねえ + さん = おねえさん (oneesan)
- older brother: お + にい + さん = おにいさん (oniisan)
